This first strip was made to introduce the main characters who give name to the strip. We felt very important that they appeared together in the first strip, but Pea doesn't appear until five strips later. It isn't a funny strip but simply strip of introduction, but we like how it expresses the personality of each character. While Onion sees himself as a great superhero, Pea looks at the audience with resignation.
A curious fact in the first panel, we can see a section of DNA and the representation of the atom through the Rutherford model. The Rutherford model or planetary model is a model of the
atom devised by
Ernest Rutherford. Rutherford directed the famous
Geiger-Marsden experiment in 1909, which suggested on Rutherford's 1911 analysis that the so-called "
plum pudding model" of
J. J. Thomson of the atom was incorrect. Rutherford's new model for the atom, based on the experimental results, had the new features of a relatively high central charge concentrated into a very small volume in comparison to the rest of the atom and containing the bulk of the
atomic mass (the
nucleus of the atom).
Rutherford's model did not make any new headway in explaining the electron-structure of the atom; in this regard Rutherford merely mentioned earlier atomic models in which a number of tiny
electrons circled the nucleus like planets around the sun, or a ring around a planet (such as Saturn). However, by implication, Rutherford's concentration of most of the atom's mass into a very small core made a planetary model an even more likely metaphor than before, as such a core would contain most of the atom's mass, in an analogous way to the
Sun containing most of the
solar system's mass.

Esta primera tira se hizo como introducción de los dos personajes principales y que dan nombre a la tira. Nos pareció muy importante que aparecieran juntos en la primera tira, aunque el guisante no realmente aparecerá hasta cinco tiras más adelante. No es una tira de chiste sino simplemente de introducción, pero nos gusta cómo expresa la personalidad de cada personaje. Mientras que la Cebolla se ve a sí misma como un gran superhéroe el guisante mira al público con resignación.
Como dato curioso, en la primera viñeta podemos ver una cadena de ADN y la representación del átomo a través del Modelo de Rutherford. Este modelo fue desarrollado por el físico
Ernest Rutherford a partir de los resultados obtenidos en lo que hoy se conoce como el
experimento de Rutherford en 1911. Representa un avance sobre el modelo de Thomson, ya que mantiene que el átomo se compone de una parte positiva y una negativa, sin embargo, a diferencia del anterior, postula que la parte positiva se concentra en un núcleo, el cual también contiene virtualmente toda la masa del átomo, mientras que los electrones se ubican en una corteza orbitando al núcleo en órbitas circulares o elípticas con un espacio vacío entre ellos. A pesar de ser un modelo obsoleto, es la percepción más común del átomo del público no científico.
